ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The defending Patriot League Indoor Champion Navy track and field teams open the 2023-24 season with the Navy Invitational I on Saturday at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis, Md. 

The field events begin at 9 a.m. and the track events start at 11:45 a.m. The meet will not have team scoring.

Notes For Traveling Fans
• Vehicular access to the Naval Academy is limited to those drivers with a Department of Defense identification card. 
• All other visitors must either park outside of the Naval Academy grounds and walk through the security gates at Gate 1 or take the complimentary shuttles from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (550 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, Md., 21401). 
• The shuttles will run from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
• Enter the blue/west parking lot through gate 5 off of Taylor Avenue. 
• The cost of parking is $10.
• Visitors 18 years and older must present a government-issued identification card (driver’s license / passport) to gain access to the Academy grounds, while visitors 17 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

2022-23 Indoor Season Recap
The men’s team went undefeated in 2022-23, defeating Princeton, Army and winning the Patriot League Indoor Championship.

The Mids posted a 113-68 victory at the Army-Navy Indoor Star Meet, which is part of the 
Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA. The Mids recorded their largest margin of victory over the Black Knights since 1992. Navy claimed first place in 13 of the 17 events and earned the maximum points (eight) in seven. 

The men’s team won the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship for its 12th indoor conference title. The Mids won the championship for the third-consecutive time the meet has been held and the ninth in the last 10 times. Navy scored 256 points as a team, which is the third-highest score in championship history. The Mids claimed gold in eight of the 18 events (200m, 5,000m, 60m hurdles, 4x400m relay, distance medley relay, pole vault, shot put and heptathlon).

After winning his fourth indoor men’s title, Director of Track and Field / Cross Country Jamie Cook received his fourth Patriot League Indoor Championship Men’s Coach-of-the-Year award. Additionally, Jacques Guillaume was the recipient of the Patriot League Indoor Championship Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet and was named the meet’s highest point scorer. He won the 200m (21.37) and anchored the first-place 4x400m relay team (3:10.96). The Jacksonville, Fla., native also finished in second place in the 400m (46.95). 

The women’s team defeated Army and won the 2023 Patriot League Indoor Championship.

The Mids claimed their fourth-straight victory against the Black Knights by a score of 111.5-69.5. Navy won 14 of the 17 events and earned the maximum points (eight) in eight. The Mids surpassed the 100-point mark for the first time since 2014 and ended with the third-highest point total in the all-time series.

The women’s team posted the second-most points in meet history (214.5) to win the Patriot League Indoor Championship. Navy won its seventh overall and fourth-consecutive indoor title. The Mids finished in first place in seven of the 18 events (4x800m relay, distance medley relay, 60m hurdles, long jump, triple jump, weight throw and pentathlon).

Coach Cook also garnered the women’s coach-of-the-year honor for the fourth time during his tenure at Navy. Molly Chapman was named the Patriot League Indoor Women’s Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the long jump (5.87m / 19′ 3.25″) and triple jump (12.30m / 40′ 4.25″). Jia Anderson was tabbed the rookie of the meet thanks to a first-place finish in the 60m hurdles (8.58). 

Meet the Captains
Joshua Boamah and Annie Taylor were selected by their peers to serve as captains for the indoor season.

Boamah won the shot put (17.36m / 56′ 11.5″) and placed second in the weight throw (20.42m / 67′ 0″) at the 2023 Patriot League Indoor Championship. His weight throw mark ranks second in Navy history. 

The San Diego, Calif., native was an NCAA East Regional qualifier in discus, hammer throw and shot put during the outdoor season. He was recognized as the Patriot League Men’s Field Athlete of the Meet and highest point scorer at the outdoor championship. He placed first in the shot put (17.67m / 57′ 11.75″) and discus (54.71m / 179′ 6″) and second in the hammer throw (66.20m / 217′ 2″). Additionally, Boamah was named the Men’s Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet at the IC4A Championship. He won the shot put (17.10m / 56′ 1.25″) and placed second in the discus (51.73m / 169′ 9″) to help Navy finish in first place as a team for the eighth time.  

Taylor was the top multi-event athlete in the Patriot League during her junior campaign. She won the pentathlon at the indoor championship with a season-best score of 3,666 points. The Nashville, Tenn., native then claimed the gold medal in the heptathlon at the outdoor championship with a season-best score of 4,985 points. Her pentathlon and heptathlon scores rank sixth and third in program history, respectively. Additionally, she finished in second place in the 400m hurdles at the outdoor championship with a time of 1:02.83.

Taylor was also named the Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was the first midshipman to win the women’s outdoor award since Brigid Byrne in 2013. The mathematics major earned her second Patriot League academic team accolade after previously being recognized during the indoor season. Additionally, she earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators.

Taylor is currently one of the top-ranked mids in the class of 2024. She stands second in the Military Order of Merit, first in the Academic Order of Merit and fifth in the Overall Order of Merit. She has received six USNA academic honors while maintaining a cumulative 4.0 GPA through the 2023 spring semester.

All-League Returners
Coach Cook returns 21 athletes who earned all-league honors at last year’s Patriot League Indoor Championship.

Boamah (shot put), Guillaume (200m, 4x400m relay), Sam Keeny (5,000m), Nathan Kent (4x400m relay), Matt Newell (distance medley relay), Carson Sloat (distance medley relay) and Brahmir Vick (60m hurdles) return as defending champions for the men’s team. Mids who placed second in their respective events last season include Sebasteon Allen (triple jump), Boamah (weight throw), Aidan Featherby (long jump), Collin Greene (shot put), Guillaume (400m), Keeny (3,000m), Kent (200m) and Walker Rudisaile (pole vault).

Ellie Abraham, McKenna Brophy, Mia-Claire Kezal and Alex Wercinski will look to repeat as 4x800m relay champions after winning the event for Navy for the first time since 2011. Abraham and Kayla McGuire will also defend the distance medley relay title for the third-consecutive season. 

Anderson will aim to win her second-straight 60m hurdles championship. 

Taylor looks to claim the third-straight victory in the pentathlon for the Mids. Isabella Romasko will compete alongside Taylor in the event. She placed second last season and was edged by Taylor by only 34 points.

Also posting second-place finishes at last year’s championship were Emily Boutin (3,000m, 5,000m) and Hannah Lowenstein (high jump).
