‘THE INHERITANCE’

The word “epic” gets tossed around a lot, but “The Inheritance” lives up to the description. Matthew Lopez’s sprawling play heads deep into the psyche of contemporary gay men as it asks questions about how a community recovers from a generational trauma — the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s — and what today’s gay men owe those who came before them.

Told in two parts over six hours, “The Inheritance” weaves compelling characters with prose both elevated and direct. After its 2018 London debut, “The Inheritance” was named best play at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards and best new play at the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards and the Laurence Olivier Awards.

The subsequent Broadway production won the Tony Award for best play, as well as top honors at the Drama Desk, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle awards.

Matthew MacDermid and Kenny Howard will direct the Central Florida premiere of the work for The Ensemble Company in Oviedo. Part I of “The Inheritance” runs Sept. 8-22, with Part II following Sept. 15-23. Those wishing to binge-watch can see both parts on the same day, Sept. 24, when the first part will be presented at noon, with the second part following at 5 p.m. Tickets are $22 per part.
