A memorial is growing at the scene of a deadly crash in the Northgate area of Sacramento.Three people died, including two children, when the driver reportedly lost control and crashed into a tree on San Juan Road east of Bridgeford Drive at about 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Eight other people, seven of them also children, were also seriously injured, Sacramento police said.“I didn’t think that it was a car crash because there were no tires screeching. It was just like it went straight for the tree,” said Isabel Flores, who lives nearby and heard a loud bang.Police said two women and nine children between 3 and 8 years old were in the small sedan.Watch the full Wednesday night briefing by officials in the video below “Everything just happened so quickly,” Flores said. “People just started parking their cars and running out to help.”One man who tried to help pull the children out of the car asked to remain anonymous.“It was just a bad scene, man. I’m just praying for that family,” the witness said.At the time, he tried to say what he could to comfort the children.“That they gonna make it. That they strong. That they strong, and they was shaking they head. They strong. Them is some strong kids, man, and pray for them kids,” he said.The three who died were ages, 3, 5, and 25. The others are in the hospital with serious injuries, according to police.“Them kids need help. Pray for them kids. Pray for them kids for real, everybody. I don’t care what you believe in, pray for them kids,” the witness urged.The pastor at nearby Peace Lutheran said some of his members were actually at the church when the crash happened.“It’s hard because they probably saw a lot of stuff that most people don’t ever want to see,” Pastor Jim Pevy said.One woman who asked to remain anonymous said she was in the parking lot and called 911. She said she noticed the adults and children were all in their swimsuits, and a family member also confirmed that the group was driving after spending time at a pool.Police are still investigating the cause, but they believe speed may have been a factor.The identity of the victims will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office once the next of kin is notified.Editor’s Note (June 1, 2023): Sacramento police have clarified that the ages of the children killed are 3 and 5 years old.
